She liked to make believe. She cut out crowns from orange construction paper. She was the queen of her bedroom kingdom and the teddy bear people who lived there. Sometimes, its not easy to pretend. Sometimes mommy’s yelling too loud at daddy. He would yell back. He would crack her face against the walls. The floor would rumble, the neighbors would shout, the police would come, and then they’d leave. Those times are the hardest to play pretend. Color paper as no color.
